Moosic to my Ears – Cows have Accents!

cows.jpgWe may be a small country in the UK, but we certainly have many regional variations in regards to our accents. What we didn’t know though was that our farmyard animals were also creating their own accents and according to this report, it has been proven:

Cows moo with a regional accent, according to their farmers. Dairy farmers in Somerset noticed a local twang to the sounds made by their animals and language experts confirmed the observation.

John Wells, Professor of Phonetics at the University of London, said: “This phenomena is well attested in birds. You find distinct chirping accents in the same species around the country. Farmer Lloyd Green of Glastonbury said: “I spend a lot of time with my ones and they definitely moo with a Somerset drawl.

So there you have it. Even cows have accents, now if this isn’t bizarre I don’t know what is!
