When attending a 30th birthday party, you usually have a good idea of what to expect before you even arrive. The customary bar, selection of finger food and a promise of an upcoming disco where we all attempt to ‘shake our stuff’ – however what you might not expect among the usual festivities is a Caricaturist.
This was exactly the scenario I found myself in yesterday evening and before I knew it, my ever so cheeky future Mother-in-Law had put both myself and my fiancée on a list to get the ‘Caricaturist treatment’.
A caricature can refer to a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness. In literature, a caricature is a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.
Steve Ince, a friend of mine I follow on Twitter is a dab hand at creating comic and cartoon strips with a particular dose of enjoyable humour and as much as I would like to dabble in this area, my abilities to draw are quite limited. So imagine how pleased I was to find a website called ToonDoo that allows you to easily create your own comical toon-like strips to share with others for those like me who are lacking in artistry.
Here is my first attempt below after just ten minutes learning and then using the available tools on offer:
Everyone loves an almighty giggle every now and then, however when an actual game is released that pokes fun at one of the most successful series to ever be released, it certainly demands your attention and admiration.
Duty Calls – The Calm Before the Storm is a short playable game for the PC that pokes fun constantly at the Call of Duty franchise – mocking its surreal slow motion antics, the tedium of enemy after enemy appearing, dull mission briefings and the wonders of collecting meaningless rubbish. The whole point though is to highlight the upcoming game ‘Bulletstorm’ and the Gears of War 3 beta it gives you access to. I must say the whole idea is extremely pleasing and as great as the Call of Duty franchise is, you can still have a little laugh at its expense.
When I am asked ‘James what is your favourite console of all time?’, the legendary SEGA Megadrive instantly thrusts itself to the front of the line-up, although you may have known it in your region as the SEGA Genesis. The 16-bit era of video games was a beautiful assortment of classics including the world renowned Sonic the Hedgehog. Amazingly even now, new gamers are realising the charm and wonder that these SEGA titles featured in abundance. We have witnessed various devices deliver SEGA Megadrive-like experiences, featuring on the Xbox 360, PlayStation3, Nintendo Wii, PSP and other platforms including even phones.
The things I do for research purposes! Well anyway, today came across one of these wacky and completely insane apps available on the Apple iPhone and decided to experiment. Below is the result of this strange fascination that individuals (including myself) have with the darn right bizarre.
Talking Larry the Bird is an app that allows you to record an interaction with this strange creature perched innocently on a branch. Unfortunately for poor Larry, you have a few methods of causing harm as well as having him repeat whatever you say in a squeaky pitched voice. This can then be uploaded to YouTube as I have done so here or emailed to your account.
