App Creation #52 – App Design – Creation

Gadgets and gizmos capable of utilising apps include hardware and software features that programmers can take advantage of. Allowing access to hundreds of areas including contacts, photos, videos, storage and much more besides.

Software Development Kit

Software Development Kit also known as an SDK is a set of development tools that are used to create an app. They include debugging modes that can diagnose any errors with your created software and present previews of how the apps design, functionality and animations will behave on the actual hardware.

Depending on the operating system creators, the SDK tools will either be available for free or require a subscription payment. You are certainly not priced out of access to these important areas and even paying for an SDK shouldn’t discourage your app creation desires.

Example of an SDK

Keep it Real!

Although the SDK includes a simulation, own the target device for additional testing.

Application Programming Interface

API (Application Programming Interface) is the method that allows developers access to various services within a device. If you wish to tap into the information within the contacts area of a phone for example, you will need access via an available API. Without it, you will be unable to legitimately obtain any data from the device that you may require for your app.

API Evolution

Before developing an app, make sure that access is allowed to the area you wish to concentrate on. Hardware and software manufacturers for app capable devices often update their operating systems, adding additional API abilities. Keep an eye on the latest developments to manage any effects this might have on your idea or creation.

API calls can also be adjusted or even removed entirely, which can effectively break or even worse – permanently disable the functionality of your app.

Easter Eggs

Apps often feature easter eggs, which are hidden surprises that require a little cunning to unlock. These can include additional options, functionality or a humorous diversion.

Easter eggs are a superb way of attracting attention to your masterpiece by getting the community to share how they found the solution, however it has also been used to bypass certain programming restrictions by cheeky developers. As tempting as this may sound, stick to the rules and don’t risk the humiliation of your app being removed from the marketplace.

App Creation Series

There are literally hundreds of thousands of applications and games available to download using the digital marketplace. These range from basic clocks to fully fledged 3D gaming experiences rivalling even the leading portable devices that usually only specialise in this field.

Your challenge is competing with this vast library of already impressive offerings which, although a daunting prospect to the fledgling traveller, can be navigated successfully with the right ideas and implementation. Whether you want to create an income generator or simply desire recognition for your efforts, this book will aim to show you the path and inspire your imagination to overflow with possibilities.
