App Creation #14 – App Inspiration – TWiTpad

Tablet devices offer screen space almost equivalent to a decently sized computer monitor. The TWiTpad app is therefore able to offer various additional elements along with the standard video, which provides interaction with the live shows.

Not Just Video

The TWiT network (which stands for This Week in Tech) covers as the name suggests various technology related topics with a few shows that drift into other areas. These presentations are streamed live over the Internet and so of course the TWiTpad app allows you to view this video.

Tablets can be held either vertically or horizontally and this is used to great effect. In the standard upright position, TWiTpad displays the streaming video at the top and the chat room in the remaining space. Held on its side, you see the video filling almost all of the screen.

Live Interaction

The beauty of the TWiT video shows is that they are streamed live, so if you wish to comment on one of the guest’s remarks, the hosts or a member of the TWiT fan base, you can accomplish just that by logging into the provided chat room.

As you would expect, the banter and brand allegiances within this community chat area are vigorously tested and can be punished for erroneous facts and falsehoods. A joyous sense of togetherness seeps through though as the community shares their knowledge and experiences with the live presenters.

This engagement is far more interesting than could ever be offered with television – as any feedback or commentary by a community member is often after the event with very little conversation with the people behind the camera. Twit.tv and the TWiTpad app offers an actual studio connection for the users and even though not everyone will have their thoughts read aloud, you can at least participate in something far greater than previously envisioned.
