Stephen Hawkings Not Over the Moon

hawking.jpgThere is nothing like a stark warning to depress you in the morning, but Stephen Hawking suggests that we will have to expand to the Moon and even Mars to survive total annihilation:

It might be time to pack up and head to the moon, according to world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking. He says for humans to survive they must leave planet Earth. He believes it will one day be destroyed so a move elsewhere in the universe is inevitable. This could begin with a colony on the moon in just 20 years time – or on Mars in 40 years.

“We won’t find anywhere as nice as Earth but it is important that we spread out into space for the survival of the species” warned Hawking, 64. “Life on Earth is at the ever increasing risk of being wiped out by global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we haven’t even thought of.”

So there you have it, although I am still hoping that we will expand to other colonies in our solar system and indeed have Earth just like in Star Trek’s vision, although that is a very optimistic view.
